Gorilla Trekking Permits: How Booking, Rules and Verification Work

Understand what a gorilla permit covers, how to verify it, booking categories, changes and the questions to ask before payment.

A gorilla-trekking permit authorizes one named participant to join a regulated visit on a specified date, subject to the park authority’s rules. It is not a promise that weather will cooperate, a guarantee of a particular gorilla family, or a complete travel package.

Who issues permits?

What is normally controlled by the permit?

  • traveler identity;
  • date and activity;
  • park and sometimes briefing sector or allocation logistics;
  • residency or nationality price class;
  • participant age and health eligibility;
  • group size and viewing duration under current rules.

What is usually outside the permit?

Transport, accommodation, visas, insurance, porter, tips, meals outside the authority’s stated inclusion and equipment are generally separate. Request an itemized invoice rather than letting “permit included” obscure the rest.

Uganda’s payment timing changed in 2026

UWA’s 26 February 2026 notice says its former seven-day unpaid reservation window was suspended from 1 March 2026. It states that operators can secure permits only upon full payment at booking. That makes careful verification before payment even more important.

How to verify before paying

  1. Open the authority’s official website yourself.
  2. Confirm the operator’s legal identity and current authorization.
  3. Record park, date, activity, traveler name and pricing category.
  4. Read refund, transfer, illness and closure terms.
  5. Ask when and how official proof will be supplied.
  6. Pay through a traceable channel named on formal documentation.
  7. Keep copies offline for travel.

Residency categories are not interchangeable

Uganda distinguishes foreign nonresident, foreign resident, rest-of-Africa and East African categories in published notices. Rwanda also lists standard and selected special-offer categories. Eligibility requires evidence and may change. Misrepresenting status is not a travel hack.

Changes, illness and refunds

Terms vary. Uganda’s announced April, May and November low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Other permits may have different rules. Ask what happens if you become ill, the park closes, a flight is delayed or government advice changes—and compare the answer with your insurance.

Permit fraud warning signs

  • payment to an unexplained personal account;
  • no named authority, park or date;
  • a price far below the applicable official category;
  • pressure to pay before written terms;
  • an editable “permit” that cannot be verified;
  • sales of Virunga trekking despite its official closure.

After booking

Reconfirm the meeting point, time, identity-document requirement, health rules, minimum age, packing guidance and operator emergency contact. Recheck official access close to travel. A genuine permit does not rescue an itinerary built around the wrong Bwindi sector.

Frequently asked questions

Does a permit guarantee seeing gorillas?

No wildlife encounter can be absolutely guaranteed. Trackers and habituated-group knowledge make encounters highly structured, but the forest remains dynamic.

Can I give my permit to someone else?

Do not assume transferability. Identity and change rules are authority-specific; request a written official answer.

Should I post my permit online?

No. It may expose identity, booking references or codes useful to fraudsters. Share scenic memories, not documents.

Bottom line

Treat the permit like a regulated conservation credential and a valuable identity document: verify its source, understand its restrictions, protect its data and match the whole itinerary to it. See current numbers in our permit price guide.
