News summary: Virunga National Park reported two separate mountain gorilla twin births during the first three months of 2026. The first twins were discovered in the Bageni family on January 3; a second set was later recorded in the Baraka family.
Source status: official park reports. Infant condition can change, so this article avoids treating birth as a guaranteed survival outcome.
The Bageni family twins
Community trackers found that adult female Mafuko had given birth to two males. Both appeared healthy when first observed. The births increased the Bageni family to 59 individuals at that time, making it the park’s largest monitored family.
Virunga reported that Mafuko had previously delivered twins in 2016, but those infants died within a week. That history underlines why teams monitor newborn twins closely without making early survival predictions.
A second set in the Baraka family
In March, the park announced another twin birth in the Baraka family. The infants were believed to be one female and one male and were approximately two weeks old when reported. The park said the births brought the family to 19 individuals.
Virunga described twin births as occurring in less than one percent of mountain gorilla births. Twins place additional demands on a mother because two dependent infants must be fed, protected and transported.
What the births do—and do not—mean
Each birth matters in a subspecies whose most recently combined survey estimate was 1,063. However, births in habituated groups cannot by themselves establish the trend of the entire subspecies. Population trend requires standardized surveys, survival records, deaths, transfers and estimates from both mountain gorilla landscapes.
Monitoring without interference
Park teams said they increased monitoring and protection. Responsible reporting should not encourage visitors to seek unusually close views of newborns. Distance and health rules remain especially important because respiratory infection can threaten gorillas.
